I would write that there was fresh snow here the day before yesterday, and that there was a storm with heavy downpour yesterday, but that today looked better with the wind lying down and the rain having become more modest, if the temperature hadn’t dropped, turning the raindrops to snowflakes. First slowly they fell, melting when they reached the ground, but now they are thick and lie not only on the trees, but also on the roads.
We drove up to Arthurs pass (note the use of capitals: “Arthurs Pass” is the name of the village, “Arthurs pass” is the name of the pass itself) at about 4 in the afternoon, only a short drive uphill from the village and I believe one of the, if not the highest road in New Zealand. There, we actually saw snow ploughs clearing the roads. Mind you, it might be that december is just around the corner, but december is summer here - equal to june in the norther hemisphere; and in latitude, Arthurs Pass would be somewhere in Switzerland (matches the altitude nicely as well – about 900 meters).
What we saw at Arthurs pass was only a small view of what was about to come though. As I’m writing this, the roads are covered in snow, in spite of the snow ploughs sweeping the streets clean every 15 minutes. Judging by the current weather, we might actually be the ones with a white Christmas!
