Straight from Nirvana

It’s been a while, but then again, there isn’t really anything to tell. We didn’t do the Tongariro Crossing (aka go through Mordor) after all, because of the bad weather. They wouldn’t let us go up there. After we left the hostel at National Park Village, where the weather was bad, we’ve spend two nights at Wellington (okay, one of it’s suburbs, Johnsonville, at Nienke’s niece’s place. The weather was bad.

Yesterday, we took the Interislander from Wellington to Picton, so we’re now on the South Island. The weather was bad. They say the 3hr journey accross the Cook Strait is beautiful and romantic. They lie. The ferry is big and boring, and the weather was bad.

From Picton, we drove through Nelson (where the weather was good), taking not the 75km-long highway, but the 35km-long Queen Charlotte Drive, which takes twice as long to Takaka, near the Golden Bay. We’d left Wellington at 7.15. It was 17.15 when we arrived at Takaka, and the weather was good. Not that it had been of any use – we’d been driving along narrow roads the entire day.

The next morning, this morning it is, at 9am, the weather was good. At 10am, the weather was bad. And now, at 10pm, it’s still bad. I should thank God on my bare knees they have a copy of The Lord of the Rings (the book, that is) here.

“Here”, by the way, is “Annie’s Nirvana Lodge”. It’s as queer as it sounds. Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen at least 8 completely mad persons. The worst thing though, is the group of Germans here. They’ve done nothing but watch movies all day long (at least four), with the volume turned way to far up, cooking a meal that smells so bad even the rats would faint and then laughing way to hard over their dispeckable dinner. Can’t have it all, I guess…
