The past two days we’ve been in Punakaiki, a small village known only for the Pancake Rocks, limestone rocks that have been shaped by the sea to resemble giant pancake stacks. We ate pancakes tonight as well, but we’re already in Franz Josef Glacier, so, yeah, whatever. The hostel in Punakaiki is called the “Te Nikau Retreat” and is listed in a book called “Retreats of New Zealand”, a bit of an antroposofical, alternative list of retreats where you can relax and stuff (they really try to live up to this, for example by not putting locks on any of the doors), but in reality is just a youth hostel. When we arrived we already smelled a not-so-pleasant odor, but didn’t know what it was. It was not until later, when one of our “retreat mates” turned the fridge around, that we found a dead rat in the back of it. Wonderful. They didn’t even give me a refund.
There’s happy news as well though: I’ve finally uploaded some more photo’s (about 16), from Lake Tekapo, Arthur’s Pass and Punakaiki, sorry for the long wait!
