Drie weken

Drie weken nog. 21 dagen, 504 uur, 30240 minuten, 1.814.400 seconden, oneindig veel Plancktijden. Het lijkt kort, maar het is lang. Of andersom. Drie weken is de tijd dat ik in Ethiopië zat, en in Zwitserland in de zomer van 2005. Drie weken gelden had ik end of year borrels bij docenten thuis, en over drie weken ben ik weer thuis, zie ik mezelf over het zesbaans zoab zoeven. Het is gek hoe je aan alles gehecht raakt: de gaten in het bolle wegdek, de lompe, inefficiënte, milieuonvriendelijke gele taxi’s, de slechte koffie van de deli op de hoek, ja, zelfs aan de dakloze bedelaar die je ‘s nachts in het Frans aanspreekt en aan de intense smerigheid van 14th street station. Drie weken nog, en dan zijn al die dingen opeens heel ver weg. Vroeger eindigde de heimwee bij het begin van de terugreis, nu is de heimwee totaal afwezig. Het lijkt gisteren dat ik in Amsterdam was, maar het was toch echt vorig jaar. Misschien ben ik in m’n hoofd al aan de terugreis begonnen.

When in Ethiopia, I didn’t write a single post. Somehow, it all seemed so pointless; there’s now way you can convey the sensation of dozens of people shouting ‘Faranji!’ at you, no way you can explain the impact of poverty with your stories, so there’s no point in trying. Maybe it finally taught me to enjoy something sec - No bullshit, just look at it, see it for what it is and recognize you’re one lucky fucking bastard. Which reminds me of a Sigmund cartoon – youth comes to Sigmund, saying, ‘Ik neem het leven zoals het komt’, ‘I take life the way it comes’, to which the doctor replies, ‘So how’s it going thus far’? – ‘Not so well – I don’t understand where it is”. Maybe I was like that. Anyway, photo’s are due soon.

Omdat analoog ook best mooi is (en omdat ik in november toch ook wat moest schrijven).

Foto’s uit Zwitserland, herfst 2004. Ze hebben hier nooit op de site gestaan — en waarom? Onder- en overbelichting, een scheve horizon en gebrek aan detail, stofjes op het negatief: is dat niet wat een foto mÃ©Ã©r maakt dan alleen een droge registratie?

New Zealand

It’s now exactly one year ago that I left home and went to New Zealand. It’s strange how that now seems like a dream, something from another life really. Looking out the window at the grey sky, it seems unbelievable that I really was there not all that long ago, a feeling I’m sure everybody who has been on a journey like this knows.

I also thought that one year since my departure would be a good time to finally put my finished photo’s online. I’ve stitched panorama’s together, enhanced colors, lightened, darkened, cropped, added photo’s, ditched photo’s, and now you can finally see my efforts. So check out the gallery now. I’m also well on my with the photo’s from Venice, and I’ve been to Berlin recently. So stay tuned.
